Join American landscape painter Donald Jurney on a four day, "Spring at Maudslay" plein-air painting workshop at this wonderful, 450-acre former estate, situated along the the Merrimack River in historic Newburyport, Massachusetts. Maudslay features both garden and meadow/woodland subjects, in addition to views from the bank of the Merrimack itself. Among the many remarkable features is the spectacular May blooming of the azaleas and rhododendrons. Filled with both ornamental trees and towering pines, Maudslay offers an ever-changing panoply of subjects, from rolling fields to a secluded brook, and it boasts one of the largest naturally-occurring stands of mountain laurel in the Commonwealth. This breathtaking landscape is an inspiring location to paint and to learn. Through demonstrations, discussions, and critiques, as well as hands-on painting, side-by-side in the field, Donald will show us how to see this Newburyport landscape with the eyes of an artist, and will further our own understanding of the language of painting.

On Friday, the workshop will culminate with another short demonstration in Donald's Amesbury, Massachusetts studio, housed in an historic 19th c. brick studio building. There Donald will give one last critique, and will take another opportunity to answer questions, focusing especially on using our newly-gained insights when we're finally back in our own studios. At mid-day, we will be Donald's guests at a farewell lunch where we can all make plans for keeping in touch with our new friends.

Join American landscape painter Donald Jurney on a 4 day plein air painting and museum adventure in and around the hills and valleys of Vermont. Perkinsville and Chester, Vermont were locales for some of the best works by Willard Metcalf (1858-1925). We will find some of his chosen sites and paint and learn together along the Black and Little Williams Rivers, all dominated by Hawks Mountain. The workshop will begin with a visit and museum talk at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA. Donald will discuss a number of the paintings, speaking of particular compositions, techniques and moods that we will consider during our painting sessions. Through demonstrations, discussions, critiques and hands on painting side-by-side in the field, Donald will show us how to observe the Vermont landscape through the eyes of an artist and further our understanding of the language of painting.

Twelve rooms at the Inn at Weathersfield in Weathersfield, VT have been blocked specifically for this June workshop and will serve as the base camp for our four-day adventure. The Inn is listed as among the best in the U.S. and has a restaurant and Tavern of great reputation. It is recommended that you book early, as rooms are on a first come-first-serve basis. There are other accommodations available nearby if necessary.

From Donald, regarding the palette: You will notice that there are 13 colors plus white, on the suggested palette list. Some of these colors may be new ones to you and some students may be surprised to see no cadmium yellows, cadmium red, or pthalo blue. I personally think that they are too strident for outdoor painting and they definitely require tremendous care to make sure they don't dominate your painting. Mother nature is a girl full of nuance, and I'm sure you'll find your job a great deal easier, and more fun, using this particular palette. The three colors, identified in the photo by asterisks, are required of everyone. Be assured, nonetheless, that we'll figure it out, no matter what odd assortment you bring from your own paint box. And, certainly, bring some of your favorites for show and tell.

Q: What is the schedule and structure of the workshop?

A: On Tuesday, June 05, 2012, we will meet at The Clark Art Institute (225 South Street in Williamstown, MA) at 11:00 am. We will grab some lunch and introduce ourselves, and head to the galleries where Donald will talk about a number of paintings, speaking of particular compositions, techniques, and moods that we'll want to think about during the workshop. At the conclusion of the gallery talk we will head off to our accommodations at the Inn at Weathersfield, Weathersfield, VT. (Approximately 1:44 from Williamstown, MA to Weathersfield, VT).

On Wednesday and Thursday we will meet at our painting locations at 9am each morning. There will be a painting demonstration and we will paint until noon. Break for lunch and continue to paint until 4pm. Each days painting session will conclude with a group critique. During the day, Donald will come around to each student and offer suggestions and answers to request for assistance. Friday morning we will do an oil sketch or two, followed by a final critique and farewell lunch. We will pack up our kits and make our way back to our studios, filled with lots of things to think about, and new friends.

Q: What if it rains?

A: The Inn at Weathersfield has an indoor conference room that we are welcome to use as our studio in the event of rain.

Q: I am traveling by air to this workshop, what are the airline guidelines for safely traveling with oil paints and solvents?

A: TSA regulations prohibit more than 3oz of liquid in your carry on luggage. Your best bet is to pack your paints in your suitcase. Liquin and Odorless Mineral Spirits are not allowwed in the cargo area of airplanes. I am advising participants to order Liquin and OMS from online art suppliers like ASW or Dick Blick and simply put my mailing address in along with your purchase and have them sent to me. Please send me a note detailing your package and I am more than happy to send you a note when the package arrives and transport it to you at the workshop. My mailing address is:
