A  Seven-day Plein Air Painting Workshop 

with Donald Jurney

Come along and join American landscape painter Donald Jurney on a seven-day, "September in the Highlands" plein air painting workshop. We'll paint amid the breathtaking scenery of Loch Lomond and Loch Katrine, surrounded by glens and great mountains.

Located right on the edge of the Trossachs, and proud of its claim to Rob Roy, Callander is the gateway to this glorious area. Although small, it has a long history of hospitality, and has played host to Sir Walter Scott, and to Dorothy and William Wordsworth. The Glasgow Boys painted in the area, and John Ruskin spent a memorable time in Brig o' Turk.

There are a wealth of B&Bs, and several inns, in Callander. A number of restaurants and pubs can keep us well-fed, and ready to explore and record the manifold colors of the Highlands.


The workshop is seven days. It is recommended that, if possible, you arrive in Scotland a day or two earlier, in order to take the edge off your jet-lag. We will meet in Callander on Saturday morning (9/22), and get to know each other a bit. Donald will spend some time talking with you about painting, and hearing about things you'd particularly like him to address during the workshop. We'll break for lunch, then assemble at our first painting spot. Here, Donald will do a short demonstration, followed by painting time. At the end of our afternoon of painting, Donald will give a short critique. Pretty exhausted, we'll all be ready for supper and bed!

On each of the next six days, we'll begin with a morning demonstration, followed by painting until lunchtime. In the afternoon there will be another demonstration, followed again by more painting time. The session will finish with an end-of-day critique, where everyone's work will have a chance to be center stage. Donald will suggest useful things to think about, and give helpful pointers toward making better paintings.

During every painting session, Donald will visit each artist's easel, answering questions, and giving help and advice.It's important to Donald that you understand all the things he'll be talking about, and that
you return home refreshed and re-invigorated, armed with a myriad of new skills, ready to make great leaps in your work. You will be encouraged to ask for help, and to remember that there are no stupid questions. Although the participants will be of varying experience, from novices to advanced students, Donald seeks to create a mood of collegiality, and he expects everyone to be on board.

Should we have the opportunity, Glasgow and Edinburgh are both not far away, filled

with great museums. If you should wish to take some time to do other things, like shopping or sightseeing, you should feel free to do so, taking a morning, or an afternoon, or even a whole day off----guilt-free.

Transportation to and from Callander, and while you are in residence, will be the responsibility of each student, as will accomodations, and all meals. Please be aware that the cost of $750.00 represents only the cost of your tuition for the workshop. All other expenses are your responsibility.

You may also be pleased to know that there is no requirement that you be able to play the bagpipe, or that you wear a kilt while painting on the braes.
