Frequently Asked Questions (Spring at Maudslay May 2012)

Q: What is the schedule and structure of the workshop?
A: On Tuesday, May 15, 2012, we will meet at The parking lot of Maudslay park in Newburyport, Massachusetts at 9:00 am. We will introduce ourselves, get acquainted with each other and discuss the strategy and expectations of the workshop. There will be a painting demonstration and we will paint until noon.

Break for lunch and continue to paint until 4pm. Each days painting session will conclude with a group critique. Wednesday and Thursday will be the same schedule, meeting in the parking lot of Maudslay at 9:00, however, we will change painting locations within the park each day. During the day, Donald will come around to each student and offer suggestions and answers to request for assistance. Friday morning we will meet at Donalds Amesbury, MA studio for a final group critique and farewell lunch at The Flatbread Pizza company. We will pack up our kits and make our way back to our studios, filled with lots of things to think about, and new friends.

Q: What if it rains?
A: The Rangers at Maudslay have allowed us the use of a Carriage House with large bay doors that open and look out onto the park.  As always, we will meet in the Maudslay parking lot at 9:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, rain or shine.  As mentioned above, Friday, we will meet at Donald's Amesbury, Mass studio.  Address and directions to his studio will be provided at the workshop.

Q: I am traveling by air to this workshop, what are the airline guidelines for safely traveling with oil paints and solvents?
A: TSA regulations prohibit more than 3oz of liquid in your carry on luggage. Your best bet is to pack your paints in your suitcase. Liquin and Odorless Mineral Spirits are not allowwed in the cargo area of airplanes. I am advising participants to order Liquin and OMS from online art suppliers like ASW or Dick Blick and simply put my mailing address in along with your purchase and have them sent to me. Please send me a note detailing your package and I am more than happy to send you a note when the package arrives and transport it to you at the workshop. My mailing address is:

Q: I have very little experience painting outdoors, is this workshop appropriate for me?
A: This workshop welcomes participants of all levels and is appropriate for beginners to experienced professionals. There is much to be learned and shared. Donald will discuss and demonstrate the visual language of paint and share ideas about seeing the landscape through the eyes of an artist. In the spirit of peer camaraderie, we will paint side-by-side in this exquisite landscape, sharing a mutual interest and deep affection for the world of art and nature. With the inclusion of Donald's experienced insight and examination of the landscape, we envision this adventure to be more of a rich cultural experience beyond a plein air workshop.

(If you have any questions related to this workshop, please feel free to send them to workshop monitor Todd Bonita at tmbonita@gmail.com and I will do my best to answer any and all of them).
